Last week we went berry picking at a local no spray berry farm called Philbrook Farm. We actually went twice in one week. The first time we went to pick blueberries and met Armando's brother Chili's wife Lily and her kids. My kids loved picking the berries, putting them in their bucket, then eating them all. They had a great time. For about 10 minutes. Then it was non-stop whining and crying. Despite their efforts to get me to pack up and head home, Armando and I stuck it out and we came home with half a 5 gallon bucket of blueberries. We will need more to freeze and last us the next 11 months, but it's a good starts.
A few days later, we returned to the same farm, but a different area of it to pick the last of the raspberries for the season. Armando had a job, so the kids and I went and met my friend Eryn and her family there. Again, like clockwork, the kids were only happy for the first short part of our visit there, then began to whine and cry. Oh the joys. Again, I did my best to stick it out as long as possible before we all lost our berries. We sat and took a little break, nursed Ezra and I listened to Esperanza whine about how much she wanted to go home - thinking that might buy me a few extra minutes of berry picking. It did. Then, as we were ready to pack it up and leave when they began to fuss again, Armando showed up by surprise. He had had a job in the area, and no further calls for work, so he stopped to help us pick berries, and help with the kids. Good thing, otherwise we'd have gone home almost empty handed.
That smile was not for me, but for Eryn.
