The night before driving into South Dakota, we stayed at a sketchy RV park in a small town on the eastern side of Wyoming called Newcastle. We had driven all day after leaving Yellowstone and just needed a place to sleep. It worked and we survived. We left for The Black Hills early in the morning. Our first stop was Crazy Horse. We browsed the museum, watched a video about the history and making of the sculpture before going outside to look at the mountain.
From there, we went to Mount Rushmore. We took some photos, the kids did the ranger program there and we got our National Parks passport stamped.
Then it was on to the Badlands National Park. The drive through the park was beautiful. The colorful rock formations, the canyons and the landscape was amazing. At every stop, the kids enjoyed looking at rocks and at the Fossil Exhibit Trail they climbed some of them. We didn't see very much wildlife, probably because it was the middle of the day. At the end of the Badlands drive, we stopped in the ranger station so the kids could do the ranger program and we got our National Parks Passports stamped.
The entire drive through the Black Hills and surrounding area was breathtaking!
By the time we were done sight seeing in this area, it was late afternoon. We drove up through Rapid City and got on to 90 going East. We made one more stop through a little shopping center called Wall Drug. It was like a bunch of mini Wal Marts, but set up in an old town feel like city street. It was odd. Esperanza bought a nail file. Maybe one of the kids got some gum too.
After that we drove for a few hours, crashed at a KOA somewhere along the road and got up early and hit the road again.
Before cruising right through the rest of South Dakota the next day, we made an early stop to see a beautiful statue called Divinity. The kids laid on the beds in the back and played on their phones while we drove straight though the rest of the state.
